The Lower Engadine Valley, it's river En flowing towards Austria and, eventually the Danube,is dotted with villages that date to before the 30 years war. The locals still speak Romansch, a "street" dialect of Latin, and it's not unusual that the beasts stabled under the house provide some of the warmth in winter.
It feels to a Los Angeles guy a little like waking up in Middle Earth...
