A week or so ago I took a ride up California 395, which goes all the way up the Owens valley until you bump into Nevada. The Owens Valley was the background to the movie Chinatown, which was based on how a very prescient guy called Mulholland, recognizing that Los Angeles was going to need a lot of water, went about getting it. This was not a very popular move with folks who lived in the Valley which turned pretty much into a desert, the water wars lasted for years and seem to have finally petered out...but don't hold your breath!

We open with a shot of Owens lake at sunset...
That view was taken from the top of the Alabama Hills (named after a Confederate vessel of the civil war...don't ask!). The hills are famous for interesting rock formations...
